The Utes made it 16 in a row last night and kept alive the longest current win streak in NCAA football with an ugly win over San Jose State.
The Utes scored a touchdown in their opening drive, then struggled with turnovers and missed field goals through the rest of the first three quarters. Things did seem to start clicking for the Utes offense in the fourth quarter, and the final score was 24-14.
There was plenty of hand-wringing and angst among Ute players, coaches and fans about the team's shaky performance, but last night's game was a "character builder" that showed the team could stay composed in a tough situation.
What I think Ute fans don't remember when they reminisce about last year's "perfect season" was how ugly some of those wins were, and how the Utes needed a few lucky breaks--particularly a crucial TCU missed field goal--to remain undefeated.
Sometimes a tough team needs to be able to win the ugly ones.
