It was a disappointing Saturday night for Salt Lake City sports fans, with the Utah Jazz, Real Salt Lake, the Salt Lake Bees, Utah Blaze and Utah Grizzlies all suffering losses. The Jazz were beaten in their first playoff game of the season vs. the Denver Nuggets despite a tough and persistent effort.
Real Salt Lake was defeated 2-1 by the L.A. Galaxy in a rematch of last year's RSL Cup finals. The highlight of the game for RSL fans was a goal in the 41st minute by Kyle Beckerman, who became the first player to score against the L.A. Galaxy so far this season. Both of the Galaxy's goals came courtesy of Edson Buddle, who has been on fire offensively this season, scoring every one of his team's seven goals in their 4-0 start. The L.A. Galaxy now leads the Western Conference, while RSL is in fourth place with a record of 1-2-1.
RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando made a couple of nice saves during the game, despite being bested twice by Buddle. Rimando is an RSL co-captain and and an 11-year veteran in the league with two MLS Cup championships under his belt. Rimando was named the Most Valuable Player in RSL's 2009 MLS Cup championship victory. Recently, I had a chance to talk to Rimando about RSL's success, his outlook for the 2010 season and what he loves about life in Salt Lake City.
