Mid-August brings a harvest of corn, tomatoes and squash to Salt Lake area backyards and farmer's markets. It also brings a bumper crop of great weekend activities to choose from:
- The Salt Lake County Fair runs now through Saturday, Aug. 14 featuring agriculture, livestock, arts and crafts exhibits along with music, entertainment, rides, racing pigs and fair food. There's even a demolition derby, which might possibly be the world's greatest entertainment. Admission and most events are free.
- The Salt Lake City Film Festival starts today, Aug. 12 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 15. The lineup includes lots of interesting independent films, many by local filmmakers. Venues include Brewvies, the Broadway Theater, the Post Theater and the Tower Theater.
- One of Salt Lake's largest arts and crafts fairs, Craft Lake City, takes place this Saturday, Aug. 14 on Gallivan Avenue downtown behind the Wells Fargo building. Local artisans will be offering handmade items like silk-screened posters, reconstructed clothing, knitted items and jewelry. Entertainment throughout the day will include craft demonstrations, street performers and music. There's also a screening of the film Handmade Nation at the Tower Theater on Sunday, Aug. 15.
