The geese are flying over my house these days, and the morning air has a hint of fall in it. There's still plenty of summer left, but harvest time, with its bounty of ingredients for old-fashioned, homestyle recipes, is almost here.
What do you think of when you remember Mom or Grandma's home cooking? There are plenty of opportunities to connect with Utah's diverse food traditions in SLC this weekend.
- See what Utah farmers are up to at Utah Farm Day at the Downtown Farmers market, Saturday, Aug. 20, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Connect with local farmers, pet goats, sheep, piglets, rabbits and roosters, ride a mechanical bull, and taste local food products. There's a chocolate tasting class at 10 a.m., sponsored by Caputos, and a funeral potatoes cookoff at 11 a.m., sponsored by Utah's Own and Ladies Who Lunch SLC.
- Southern barbecue isn't exactly a Utah tradition, but it's certainly dear to the hearts of many Utahns. Salt Lake City's own Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned competition, the Rock 'n' Ribs Festival, takes place at the Gallivan Center Saturday, Aug. 20, from 2-10 p.m. Admission and rock music are free, and food sample plates start at $3.
- Latin style home cooking is just part of the fun at Fiesta de Pueblo, a Hispanic cultural festival taking place at Washington Square in downtown SLC today through Saturday, Aug. 18-20. Organizers promise "an amazing three-day experience, learning about multiple cultures, mingling and enjoying ethnic food, dances, and, more than anything, sharing a multicultural experience of fraternity and integration."
