Happy Pi Day! For non-geeks who need an explanation, Pi Day is March 14, because 3.14 are the first three digits of the number Pi. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter of that circle, and of course, pies are circles.

In honor of Pi Day, I've put together a short list of some of the best pies the Salt Lake area has to offer. For even more ideas, check out the list of SLC's best bakeries.

  • Dessert pies from the Left Fork Grill: The motto of the Left Fork Grill, located at 68 W. 3900 S., is "where cafe meets gourmet." The Left Fork serves elevated comfort food, including incredible pies.

  • Penny Ann's Cafe: Penny Ann's is a great comfort food spot at 1810 S. Main St., and their delicious homemade pies include key lime, chocolate peanut butter, banana cream, coconut cream, chocolate cream, peppermint cream, pecan, crumbleberry and seasonal specials.

  • Meat pies from Morrison Meat Pies: Morrison Meat Pies of West Jordan, in business since 1883, makes old-fashioned Scottish and Australian style meat pies, as well as breakfast pies, spinach and feta, chicken and veggie, steak and cheese and a lot more. Morrison Meat Pies are sold in area grocery stores including Fresh Market, Walmart and Smith's.

  • Pizza pie from The Pie: The Pie, Salt Lake City's favorite pizzeria, is offering a two-for-one special in honor of Pi Day. Locations in Salt Lake City, Murray, South Jordan and Ogden.
