Utah's Bonus Holiday

Utah is getting ready to celebrate its pioneer heritage with the state's "bonus holiday," Pioneer Day July 24. Pioneer Day, also known as the Days of '47, commemorates the day in 1947 when Brigham Young led the Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley, proclaiming, "This is the place."

Pioneer Day celebrations have already begun, but they will kick into high gear with the Days of '47 Rodeo, Utah's biggest rodeo, running July 19-24 at the Maverik Center. Celebrations on Tuesday, July 24 include the Deseret News Marathon and 5K, the Days of '47 Parade, and a Native American Celebration followed by fireworks at Liberty Park. If big public celebrations aren't your thing, Pioneer Day is an excellent time for a backyard barbecue, hiking, hanging out at the pool, or patio dining at one of SLC's favorite restaurants. Check out the links below, and make plans now for Utah's bonus holiday.
