Since 2006, Utah's Living Planet Aquarium has been hosting as many as 450,000 visitors per year in a 43,000 square foot former supermarket, adding new exhibits every year to its limited space. Now the aquarium is getting ready for the construction of a new, 136,000 square foot home in Draper, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 24. The $20 million facility, to be named the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, will be located at 12033 S. Lone Peak Parkway and is set to open in December 2013. Exhibits at the new aquarium will take visitors from the Utah deserts and mountains, to rain forest habitats, to the planet's vast oceans.
In addition to family entertainment, the new aquarium will offer expanded educational programs, field trips, and hands-on learning. The Sandy location will close September 8, 2013 to allow for transition into the new building.
