Punch Brothers, a virtuosic band that combines indie rock, folk, jazz, bluegrass, and classical music, will be onstage at The Depot in Salt Lake City Dec. 7, with special guests The Milk Carton Kids. Punch Brothers recently released a five-song EP, Ahoy!, as a follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2012 album Who's Feeling Young Now?
The band's founding member - mandolin virtuoso, singer, and composer Chris Thile - was recently named a MacArthur Fellow. The annual fellowship, often referred to as the "genius grant," awards $500,000 to individuals who "have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction." Punch Brothers was also nominated for 2012 Group of the Year by the Americana Music Association and Instrumental Group of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Awards.
