The Bottom Line

The Other Place in Salt Lake City used to stand next to a bar named 'The Place.' Now, the bar is renamed Andy's and the joke in the name has been lost. Nevertheless, The Other Place remains high on Salt Lake resident's lists of favorite breakfast spots because of the hefty portions, marinated steaks and home-like atmosphere that makes you feel like you're back home in grandma's house.

Pros

  • Homey atmosphere plus good food equals a great experience.
  • Kid-friendly with multiple selections.
  • Greek breakfasts in healthy-sized portions.
  • Late hours held for those who need a later meal.

Cons

  • Average $10 per meal is a little steep for the area.
  • The parking doesn't have enough room for the weekend-breakfast crowd.
  • There are sometimes lines on the weekend breakfast.

Description

  • 469 East Broadway Street on Capitol Hill
  • Park either on the street or in the back.
  • Go for breakfast during the week. Weekday breakfasts are often crowded and there's usually a line.
  • No reservations required at this low-key, laid-back restaurants.

Guide Review - The Other Place Restaurant Review in Salt Lake City

The Food

Breakfast

Breakfast comes on huge platters, without the grease usually associated with small, family-style diners. There's a bevy of selections for those with large appetites to those with smaller stomachs. Try the marinated steaks for variety. Breakfast is served all day.

Lunch & Dinner

The most popular dishes are the Dolmathes and the Mezedakia. As with any place, these dishes can be a hit or miss with me depending on the day. Sometimes the chicken can be served a little dry and a little burned.

The Drinks

Capitol Hill has a reputation for being 'Teetotaler Hill' because of the legislation passed just up the street. The Other Place, however, still serves up a full beer menu. Juices, sodas and other non-alcoholic drinks are available.

The Service

The service is one of the reasons Salt Lake residents are so loyal to the place. Most of the wait staff haven't changed since The Other Place opened. The girls are friendly and quick with drinks. On occasion, especially when it's crowded, the food service can be slow.

The Atmosphere

The place is decorated like Grandma's home, with silk flowers and formica tables. The lighting is ultra-bright, which makes this first floor restaurant seem open and airy.
