Vrigs looks like a fish and chips place but the menu features wonderful breakfasts and mexican platters at decent prices.

The Bottom Line

The tricky exterior at Virg's Restaurant in Salt Lake City made me think we were headed for a purely fish and chips experience. Once inside, the menu had me hooked with a huge selection of sandwiches, breakfast platters, mexican dishes and of course, the expected fish and chips. We went at a busy time but were still seated promptly and our drinks never ran dry. Then the check came and the experience just got better with the low, low prices.

Pros

  • Hearty portions at a low price.
  • The food is delicious and cooked to perfection.
  • Variety of selection appeals to all appetites.
  • Friendly, personable service even if there is a crowd.

Cons

  • The portions are oversized - if you consider that a con.

Description

  • The original Virgs Restaurant is in Erda, Utah on 4025 N Highway 36 near Toole.
  • The Salt Lake location is on 5770 South Redwood Road. You'll need to drive clear back to find Virgs near 24 Hour Fitness.
  • Kid friendly but not dieter friendly. Still, you have options if watching the calories is a priority.
  • Low, low prices for an enormous amount of food.
  • Nautical-themed decor, which may be a play off the original restaurant's location near the Great Salt Lake.
  • If you tend to eat smaller portions, consider splitting your dish with your dining partner for only a buck.

Guide Review - Virgs Restaurant Salt Lake City Review

The Place

Okay, I admit it. The place looked a little cheesy from the outset with a giant sailor thumbing me in. Inside, the marine theme continued with lighthouses, seagull statues and other nautical items. The Taylorsville location is a converted Wingers and is made to look like a '50's style diner. I was ready for a thoroughly hokey experience.

The Food

Then the menu showed up. Written next to each item was an unbelievably low price and I was sure we were in for a one star review. But, there was more on the list than just fish and chips. The late-risers in our group chose breakfast platters and I opted for a shredded beef burrito.

The platters plunked down in front of us were so overloaded, I was surprised our tiny waitress had the muscles to carry them. One kid meal could've fed our entire group. We looked around and saw heaping plates of food landing in front of other diners and our jaws dropped. We checked the menu prices again.

Then we ate and oh my!

Pancakes were golden brown, buttery pieces of heaven and the bacon was thick, crisp and tasty. Despite the crowd, we could tell that a great deal of care had gone into each dish making sure that each item was perfect before it was brought out to us.

My burrito had tender shredded beef and was smothered on the inside and outside with the best Chile Verde I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Now, it was a milder Chile Verde so for all you spice aficionados, don't take me to town for simply loving it.

The Service

The tiny waitress mentioned before was a superhero who kept the drinks filled to the max and answered all of our questions with a friendly smile. She was overworked and busy but she still managed to put a personal touch into our service.
