Unfortunately, Bella Citta Gelato & Cafe has CLOSED. If you're looking for gelato in Salt Lake City or Park City, try Vinto. If you're looking for a cozy cafe, try the Beehive Tea Room.
Bella Citta Gelato & Cafe has two locations, one in east Sandy and one on Foothill Boulevard, both serving panini, salads, soups, cappuccino and some of the best gelato you'll find this side of Roma.
I first tried gelato when traveling in Italy about fifteen years ago, and since then I've always been excited to try American versions but have usually been disappointed. However, at Bella Citta Gelato & Cafe in east Sandy and now on Foothill Boulevard, owner Rachel Bartnicki and staff serve 24 flavors of authentic, Italian-style gelato that tastes like the real thing.
Besides gelato, Bella Citta serves delicious panini, salads, soups, cappuccino and pastries. Panini options include ham or turkey and havarti; roasted tomato, ricotta and basil; and Philly steak. The roasted tomato and basil bisque is a house specialty.
On a recent visit, I tried the turkey and havarti panini with the house salad. The best thing about the sandwich was the excellent havarti; the ciabatta bread and turkey were good as well. Both the sandwich and the salad were dressed with Bella Citta's special balsamic glaze, which I thought was yummy even though I don't especially like balsamic vinegar.
After a quiet, relaxing lunch in a cozy chair by the window I tried the yogurt and sour cherry gelato, which was amazing - creamy, sweet-tart vanilla yogurt gelato laced with sour cherry syrup and studded with dried sour cherries. I've been dreaming about it ever since. Of Bella Citta's other gelato flavors I've tried in the past, my favorites are chocolate, lemon and strawberry.
Expect to pay about $8 for a sandwich and side salad at Bella Citta, about $2 for drinks and $2-$4 for gelato.
