Kyoto Japanese restaurant in Sugar House is one of Salt Lake City's oldest and most popular Japanese restaurants. It's also one of my personal favorites. Kyoto doesn't serve trendy Asian cuisine or complicated sushi rolls with names like "Playboy Roll," "Death Roll," etc. Instead, the restaurant focuses on traditional, well-prepared sushi rolls, nigiri and sashimi as well as tempura, teriyaki and other Japanese favorites.
Some of the standout dishes on Kyoto's menu are the wonderful, sweet-but-not-too-sweet chicken teriyaki and the light, tasty tempura. The shrimp and vegetable tempura are especially good. Kyoto's miso soup is the best I've had in Salt Lake City. Kyoto's portion sizes tend to be huge, so plan to share or take home leftovers.
The atmosphere at Kyoto is calm and quiet, and the kimono-clad wait staff are charming and attentive. Kyoto gets busy on weekends and even some week nights, so it's a good idea to call ahead for a reservation. If you have four or more people, ask for a private booth.
