It's a cinch to get your child enrolled in one of Salt Lake City's school districts. Utah's Open Enrollment Law applies to all districts. The Open Enrollment Law allows you to enroll your child in any district in any school in Utah, regardless of what your local school's geographical boundaries are.

This gives you and your family a wide variety of options when choosing a school to enroll in.

Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Varies

Here's How:

  1. If you are enrolling your child in a private or charter school, these schools may have different enrollment requirements than public schools. Please check each school's website and follow their instructions.

To enroll your child in one of Salt Lake's four school districts, choose a school from the website and note their open-enrollment dates. If you live within the school boundaries, you may register any time during the school year.

  2. Students must be five years of age on or before September 1st to enroll in public school. All students between six years and eighteen years of age must attend a public or private school during the school year.

  3. You must bring a birth certificate when enrolling a student in Kindergarten or if you are registering a student who has moved from another state.

  4. Most school districts require you to bring proof of immunization. Immunization requirements may vary from school district to school district and from age group to age group. Please check with your local school for their immunization requirements.

If you do not have your immunizations up to date, make an appointment with your doctor to do so.

  5. Some schools have vision and dental check-up requirements that must be fulfilled before your student reaches age seven. Make the required appointments with your physician and dentist before registering.

  6. If you are enrolling in a school that is out of your geographical boundary, you will need to apply for a permit from the district you wish to attend. Your permit may be denied based on enrollment numbers for the school. If a school is too crowded, they may deny your permit.

Once you've received a permit to attend an out-of-boundary school, you will need to receive a release letter from the school within your boundaries.

Open enrollment applications are generally accepted between December 1st and April 30th. (This may vary from school district to school district.) Please check as policies may change.
