On July 24, 1847, Brigham Young and his company entered the Utah valley and announced "This is the Place." Since then, Utah has celebrated the Days of '47 with series of events that culminate in the Days of '47 parade on Pioneer Day, the 24th of July.

The 2008 Days of '47 will feature the following:

Days of '47 Royalty

Essay Contest (grades 10-12) - 2008 Theme: "Still Pioneering Together"

Pioneers of Progress Awards

Presented at the Pioneers of Progress Awards and Dinner Gala Banquet. The public is invited.

When: July 10, 2008 - Reception at 6:30 p.m. - Dinner at 7:00 p.m.

Days of '47/KUTV Pops Concert

This year, the Choral Arts Society of Utah with Dallyn Vail bayles and the Music School's Lyceum Repertory Orchestra will play.

When: July 11-12. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m., with ticket holders seated first. Non-ticket holders seated at 7 p.m.

All Horse Parade

The Sandy City Old West Parade will be held again at the South Towne Center. The parade starts at 10000 South and 240 West and will go down and up Centennial Parkway, circle around Sandy City Hall and will return to the starting point.

When: July 12th from 10 a.m - noon.

Cost: Free

Family Fun Day at This is the Place Heritage Park

Games, carnival rides, crafts, farm activities and contests will be held at This is the Place Heritage Park. All events are free. Free food, chips, watermelon and drinks will also be available.

When: July 12 from 10 a.m - 5 p.m.

Where: This is the Place Heritage Park at 2601 East Sunnyside Ave.

Zions Bank Days of '47 Rodeo

Watch as some of the best bull-riders, steer ropers and barrel racers compete for over $300,000 in prize money.

Where: Energy Solutions Arena at 301 West South Temple

When: Kids Night - July 16th at 7 p.m. Admission for kids under 14 is half off.
July 19th - 7 p.m.
July 21st - 23rd at 7 p.m.
July 24th at 4 p.m.

First Encampment Hike

The third commemorative trek to the First Pioneer Campsite in the Salt Lake Valley. This five mile hike ends where pioneers first camped in the valley on July 22, 1847. Wagons and strollers are allowed but no bikes, skateboards or scooters. Participants are asked to make a name tag, bring a flag or dress up as a pioneer to reflect the spirit of the hike. Bring your own water.

When: July 19th from 7 a.m-8 a.m.
Where: The hike starts at Donner Park at 2770 East 990 South and ends at the First Encampment Park at 1700 South and 500 East.

Youth Parade: Kids, Bands, Smiles and Cheers - The Happiest Parade on the Planet

The parade route begins on 500 East and 600 South, with over 5,000 kids marching, playing in bands or performing on floats.

When:July 19th from 10 a.m. to noon.

Youth Festival at the City County Building

A family-oriented festival held just after the Youth Parade with informative booths, inflatable slides and bounces, face painting and other fun.

When: July 19th from 10 a.m - 2 p.m.

Where: City County Building at 200 East 500 South

Days of '47 Float Preview Party

Vote your favorite float at the Float Preview party where you can meet the masters behind the designs. Take an up close look at the colorful floats before they head down to the parade.

When: July 21 -22 from 11 a.m - 9 p.m

Where: The South Towne Expo Center on 9575 South State Street in Sandy.

Cost: Free.

International Culture Fest

Celebrate Utah's ethnic diversity the night before the parade. Booths with Mexican, Greek, Asian and other cuisine will serve food at nominal prices.

When: July 23 from 6 p.m - 11 p.m.

Where: Gallivan Center at 239 South Main Street

"I Am The Future" 10K/5K Marathon/Walk

Starting at the top of Big Mountain in Emigration Canyon, the marathon offers t-shirts to all participants and prizes for the top three male and female finalists.

When: July 24th

  • Marathon - 5:30 a.m.
  • 10K - 6 a.m.
  • 5K - 7 a.m.

  • Marathon - Top of Big Mountain above Emigration Canyon
  • 10K - Research Park at 500 South Wakara Way at the University of Utah
  • 5K - Energy Solutions Arena at 300 West South Temple in Salt Lake City.

Sunrise Service

The Pioneer Chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers will hold a Sunrise Service in the Tabernacle. A combined choir will be led by Sterling Poulsen in several patriotic songs and a flag ceremony will be done by the Mormon Battalion.

Where: Tabernacle on Temple Square

When: July 24th at 7 a.m - 8:30 a.m.

Cost: Free.

Pioneer Heritage Festival at This is the Place Heritage Park

Go back in time to 19th century Utah and see how the pioneers built their lives in the valley. See a blacksmith forge his wares, spin wool into threads and pet the animals at the petting farm.

When: July 24th-26th from 9 a.m - 5 p.m.

Where: This is the Place Heritage Park at 2601 East Sunnyside Avenue

Days of '47 KSL 5 Parade

One of the largest parades in the West winds through downtown to Liberty Park. Camp out the night before to secure your spot along the route.

When: July 24th from 9 a.m - 12 p.m

Where: The parade will start at South Temple and Main Street, east to 200 East, south to 900 South, then east to Liberty Park.

Pioneer Day Concert

The Osmonds join the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to commemorate the pioneers. Tickets are randomly distributed to registered patrons.

When: July 25th and 26th at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Conference Center at 60 West North Temple
