Things to Do in Salt Lake City: June 2008

Long, lazy summer days stretch ahead of us but you don't need to worry about filling those days with activities. Here is a listing of boredom-busters for June.

Summer is a great time to look to the mountains for recreation including camping, hiking, fishing and mountain climbing. Check out your local community college for how-to classes to get started or find a group of enthusiasts on-line.

Art Exhibits and Events

  • Salt Lake Art Center
    June 7 - 6:30 p.m.
    A Dada-inspired evening with a contemporary twist and silent auction will benefit community education programs in Salt Lake City.
  • Utah Cultural Celebration Center
    Until June 18 - Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
    From the Masses to the Masses: Art of the Yan'an Cave Artists Group. Free.

    June 26 - 6-9 p.m.
    Face of Utah Sculpture Exhibit Grand Opening. Free.

  • Utah Museum of Fine Arts
    June 23- September 21
    Monet to Picasso from the Cleveland Museum of Art Exhibit

Comedy Shows

  • The Off-Broadway Theatre
    June 6,7,13,14,20,21 at 10 p.m.
    Laughing Stock - An improv, interactive comedy troupe performs a show similar to 'Whose Line is it Anyways.' No two shows are the same.
  • Desert Star Playhouse
    Through June 7 - Shows start at 7 p.m. except Tuesday and Sunday, Matinees on Saturday
    The Wizard of Odd

    June 12-August 23 - Shows start at 7 p.m. except Tuesday and Sunday, Matinees on Saturday

  • Broadway Across America
    June 25,26,27,28 and 29 at various times at the Capitol Theatre

    June 27 - 7 p.m.
    Jerry Seinfeld at Abravenal Hall

Festivals

  • Riverton Arts Festival
    June 5,6 and 7th at Riverton City Park (12600 S. 1400 W.)
    The Riverton Metropolitan Orchestra will play and local artists will be featured. Free.
  • Utah Pride Festival and Parade
    June 6-8; Parade is on June 8 at 10 p.m. and is free. Other events vary in cost.
  • Dark Arts Festival
    June 6-8; Times vary. $25 for a full weekend pass.
    The Dark Arts Festival is held at Area 51 (451 South 400 West)
  • Wild Outdoors Festival
    June 6-7 from 10 a.m.–8 p.m. at Thanksgiving Point
    All things outdoors, including speed-climbing and a lumberjack competition.
  • Deseret Peak Days and Stampede
    June 6-8, Times vary
    Rodeo and craft show at the Toole Deseret Peak Complex.
  • Utah Chalk Art Festival
    June 13-14 at the Gateway. Free.
    Proceeds benefit the Utah Foster Care Foundation.
  • Utah Scottish Festival and Highland Games
    June 13-14, Times, prices and places vary. Please see website for details.
    Enjoy Scottish bands and music or attend the whiskey tasting party.
  • Utah's Frontier Fest
    June 13-14 at Gardner Village
    Enjoy an old-fashioned hoedown, a story fest and other pioneer events.
  • Asian Festival
    June 13-14 at the Southtowne Expo Center
    See the drummers, watch master calligraphers and dine on Asian cuisine.
  • Venture Outdoors Festival
    June 14th from 3-6 p.m. at the Canyon Rim Park
  • Strawberry Days & Rodeo
    June 15-22, Times and cost vary by activity.
    Held in Pleasant Grove, UT.
  • Utah Shakespearean Festival
    June 19-August 30. Times and prices vary.
    This festival draws nearly 150,000 people to Cedar City, Utah to view the Bard's work.
  • South Jordan City Country Fest
    June 20 at 6 p.m. at City Park (11000 S. Redwood Road)
    Enjoy a parade, food and drink at this annual event.
  • Swaner Nature Festival
    June 21, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Basin Recreation Field House in Park City (1388 Center Drive)
    Music, geocaching and nature walks are highlights of this festival.
  • Utah Arts Festival
    June 26-29, Times and events vary.
    Held at the Library Square in downtown Salt Lake City.
  • West Fest
    June 26-29 at Centennial Park in West Valley City (5415 West 3100 South)
    A carnival, parade and 5k fun run are a part of this event.
  • Heber Valley Pow Wow and Mountain Man Rendezvous
    June 27-29 at Soldier Hollow
    Admission is $6.00, children 6 and under are free.

Films

  • Friday Night Flicks
    Held at a different Salt Lake City park every Friday night starting on June 6th. See the website for listings. Free popcorn. Pizza and drinks for sale. Free.
  • Salt Lake City Film Center
    June 2 - 7 p.m. at the downtown Salt Lake City Library auditorium.
    Muxes: Authentic, Intrepid Seekers of Danger
    In Spanish with English subtitles. Free.

    June 16 - 7 p.m. at the downtown Salt Lake City Library auditorium.
    A Series of Short Films from the Burundi Film Center

    June 17 - 7 p.m. at the downtown Salt Lake City Library auditorium.
    Outside: A documentary of four gay homeless youth who live in Salt Lake City. Free.

Music

  • Kingsbury Hall
    June 4 at 7:30 p.m.
    Return to Forever - Corea, Clarke, Di Meola, White
    A fusion of rock 'n roll and jazz.
  • The Depot
    June 3 - 8 p.m.
    Erykah Badu

    June 20 - 7 p.m.
    The Reverend Horton Heath

    Bob Weir and RatDog with Government Mule

  • Broadway Across America
    June 3-9, Times vary.
    Stomp - An unconventional eight-member percussion troupe.
  • The Gallivan Center
    Free summer concerts beginning on June 7th.
    Viva SLC! is an all day rock and roll concert featuring local, live bands.
  • Gina Bachauer Piano Competition
    Song Choi (18) and Weiyi Le (13) of Utah will compete at this year's competition.
    June 16-23 at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center (138 West 300 South)
    $10 for a day pass or $100 for a two-week pass.

Theatre

  • Mormon Miracle Pageant
    June 12-14 and 17-21 at 9 p.m. Free.
    The pageant is held outdoors at the Manti Temple (500 North 200 East in Manti).
