Remembering the fallen soldiers of our US Military is the sole reason Memorial Day even exists. Too many of us consider Memorial Day weekend to be an extended holiday and forget that we are memorializing those who maintain our freedom and fight for our independence. Those who have given us the ultimate sacrifice deserve a moment of our time away from the barbeques and picnics so that we can remember their courage.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Varies

Here's How:

  1. Fly the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon and then raise it to full staff for the rest of the day. Here's more on How to Display the American Flag.

  2. Participate in the 'National Moment of Rememberance' at 3 p.m. If you are driving, please turn on your headlights during this moment. Pause and reflect upon the members of our military who've died for us, especially those who've lost their lives in the most current wars, Afghanistan and Iraq.

  3. Visit the memorials of local military troops who have served our country. Find memorials in Salt Lake City parks and at the Utah Capitol Building.

  4. Visit cemeteries and decorate graves with flowers or small flags. Tend to those graves that look neglected or adopt a grave that has been forgotten.

  5. Remember the families of those who've died. Check in on the widows and orphans and offer your services or condolences.

  6. Consider visiting a veterans hospital or donating your time and services to a nursing home where veterans live. Express your appreciation to those who have served or those who are serving by sending a letter or message online.
