Veterans Day is Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012. Here are a few of the special events planned to honor veterans in the Salt Lake area.

Salt Lake County Veterans Day Ceremony

Salt Lake County's annual Veteran’s Day Celebration will honor the more than 450 county employees and family members who have served in the military. The celebration will include a speech from Deputy Mayor Nichole Dunn, musical numbers by the West High Choir, and posting of the flag by the East High Navy ROTC.

Veterans Day at the University of Utah

Panel Discussion: "Korea: The Forgotten War"

11 a.m.

Full Dress Military Ceremony and 21-Gun Salute
Ballroom, Olpin Union Building

The ceremony will pay tribute to 11 Utah veteran honorees, who will receive honorary medallions followed by a cannon salute.

Veterans Day Ceremony at the Utah State Capitol

Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012

11 a.m.

The Veterans Day program at the Utah State Capitol Rotunda will include remarks from Don Gale (formerly of KSL and Deseret News) and a keynote speech delivered by Governor Gary R. Herbert. The UTARNG 23rd Army Band will perform various patriotic musical numbers to commemorate this event. A commemorative coin will be given to any Vietnam veteran in attendance. Additionally, five outstanding Utah veterans will be honored.

Taylorsville Veterans Day Parade and Program

Veterans Day Parade, 4900 S. 2700 W.

12:15 p.m.

Taylorsville's Veteran's Day program includes Major General Jefferson Burton as keynote speaker, flag ceremonies, recognition of Taylorsville students in the poster and essay contests, patriotic musical numbers, and historic military displays. Taylorsville City Hall, 2600 W. Taylorsville Blvd.

Living Planet Aquarium Free Admission

10 a.m.-6 p.m.

As a thank you for their dedicated and loyal service to our country, all active duty and retired military personnel, members of the National Guard and reservists, veterans and their immediate family will receive free admission to the Living Planet Aquarium with official military identification.

American Highrise Veterans Day Concert

Monday, Nov. 12, 2012

3 p.m.

The American Fallen Warrior Memorial Foundation presents "American Highrise," a patriotic celebration with music from Collin Raye, Nathan Osmond, Kurt Bestor, Jeff Senour, the Utah Army Band and The Choral Arts Society of Utah. Special Guests in attendance will include Military Officials and Government Officials. Jed Boal from KSL News will MC the event. This free event will be held at the Utah State Capitol Rotunda.

Free Meals and Discounts for Veterans

Some of the Salt Lake area restaurants offering free or discounted meals for veterans include Applebee's, Chili's, Golden Corral, Famous Dave's, Hooters, Outback, Krispy Kreme, Subway and 7-11. Check website for details.

Fee Free Weekend at U.S. National Parks

In honor of our nation's veterans, all U.S. National Parks offer free admission Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 11-13, 2011.
