In 1911, the site where the current Utah State Capitol Building now sits was called Arsenal Hill. Arsenal Hill was the storage site for munitions for the local army. When the Capitol Commission hired the Olmsted Brothers from Brookline, Massachusets, John Olmsted decided Arsenal Hill would be the ideal spot for the new Utah State Capitol Building.
The Olmsteds had their master architect, Richard K.A. Kletting draw up a winning set of designs and ground broke on Arsenal Hill in 1912. The Olmsteds designed the landscaping of 40 acres for the Capitol building and the steep hill was renamed Capitol Hill.
