Hogle Zoo was founded in 1911 with five kinds of birds, two foxes, two squirrels and a pair of monkeys. Its first location was in Liberty Park. Today, the zoo is located at the mouth of Emigration Canyon and is home to several hundred animals from all over the world.
The zoo is popular year round and is Salt Lake City's most visited family attraction. It's an affordable family outing, especially for those who have a yearly membership. Two of the zoo's newest and most interesting exhibits are the Elephant Encounter, completed in 2004, and the Asian Highlands, completed in 2006.
Hogle Zoo's Zoo Train and Conservation Carousel are a lot of fun and popular with children. Another fun Hogle Zoo tradition is the bird show, performed daily throughout the summer.
One of the zoo's best yearly events is Zoolights, featuring more than a million holiday lights in an animated animal-themed display. The zoo hosts a variety of interesting educational and fund-raising events throughout the year.
