Five Awe-Inspiring Utah Experiences to Try Before You Kick the Bucket

By , About.com Guide

The idea of creating a "bucket list," a list of experiences you would like to have before you "kick the bucket," is an intriguing one, and it made me wonder what Utah experiences are worthy of putting on a bucket list. What Utah experiences are the most memorable, the most inspiring, the most thrilling? Here's a list of five Utah experience I think everyone should try at least once in a lifetime.

1. Hike to Delicate Arch

By Nicholas Pitt

You can see Delicate Arch from the road in Arches National Park, but nothing compares to standing at the foot of this iconic Utah landmark. The hike to and from Delicate Arch is three miles roundtrip and only moderately difficult. It's appropriate for the whole family and a don't-miss Utah experience.

2. Climb to the Top of Timp

Getting to the top of Mount Timpanogos isn't what most people would call easy, but the awe-inspiring views and "made-it-to-the-top" feeling are worth the struggle. The beautiful "back side" of Timpanogos, with its lush vegetation, waterfalls and glacial Emerald Lake, is unlike other hiking destinations in desert Utah.

The most popular route to the summit of Timpanogos starts at the Timpooneke trail head and is 7 1/2 miles each way. It takes a full day, about nine hours, to get to the summit and back. Hiking to the top of Timp isn't for novices, so train with easier hikes first. I also recommend bringing a walking stick for the long downhill.

3. Experience the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

By Marsha Maxwell

Almost everyone's heard Utah's famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but attending a performance in person is a unique and inspirational Utah experience.

Anyone age eight or older can attend the live broadcast of the Choir's Music and the Spoken Word, which takes place Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the Tabernacle on Temple Square. Doors open at 8:30, and the audience should be seated by 9:15.

In June, July, August, and December, the broadcasts are held across the street in the Conference Center. Broadcasts are also held in the Conference Center during LDS semiannual General Conferences, which take place on the first Sunday of October and April. Admission on these two Sundays is only available to Conference ticketholders.

4. Fly Over the Point of the Mountain

By Marsha Maxwell

Favorable wind patterns make Point of the Mountain one of the best gliding locations in the world. People travel from around the globe, and even move to the area, just to experience the Point of the Mountain's world-class paragliding and hang gliding.

If you want to experience the thrill of Utah paragliding or hang gliding for yourself, there are lots of local outfitters who will take you on a tandem flight or teach you to fly. It's an unforgettable Utah experience.

5. Drive Highway 12

Utah's Highway 12, which runs through Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument between Capitol Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, is perfect for a spectacular road trip almost any time of year, but especially in spring or fall. Highway 12 is the only road in Utah to receive the designation All American Road, and its scenery - with a combination of red, pink, coral and yellow sandstone formations, clear blue sky and blue-green desert vegetation - is truly amazing.
